Blackpool - The Peoples Playground - a 21st Century Seaside Town

A celebratory book putting the focus on this most iconic of Britain’s holiday resorts.

FOR countless decades Blackpool has long been regarded as Britain’s undisputed capital of entertainment and it confidently asserts that it is the UK’s best-loved - and certainly best known - seaside town. Indeed the Pleasure Beach is the single biggest tourist attraction in Britain with six and a half million visitors a year.

The city is also acknowledged as the biggest and most popular resort in Europe.

It is a remarkable place of varied attractions – and some contradictions - that has touched
generations of people from all walks of life in so many different ways.

And on the commercial front the Blackpool Enterprise Project is engaged in attracting new businesses and investors.

Naturally the indigenous population hold the city dear to their hearts but it has also been a magnet for generations of holiday makers, day-trippers, conference delegates, political parties and trades unions, and the vast array of entertainers who made their reputations on the city’s stages and in its music halls – and perhaps many who still sing, dance and crack jokes on those well worn boards.

Now it is deservedly considering applying for UNESCO World Heritage Status: an accolade that will confirm the city’s reputation for fun, tourism, business and simply the enjoyment of living in one of Lancashire’s finest coastal locations.

Celebratory Book

In collaboration with Blackpool Council and a number of public and private sector organisations we are intending to publish a magnificent lavish ‘coffee table-style’ book that will celebrate Blackpool’s glowing heritage and endorse its right to be nominated a ‘World Heritage City’.

The book will be a panoramic reflection of the city’s wonderful attractions since the early days of the 20th century. And it is a fact that the magnificent Blackpool Tower - a member of the acclaimed World Federation of Great Towers - is an iconic symbol not only within the UK but internationally.

And with recent initiatives such as the Central Seafront project, the Talbot Gateway and the ambitious Casino & Conference Quarter project, Blackpool is striding into the future with ambition and vigour.

The potential of UNESCO World Heritage status is only one of the many accolades that may come its way in the early years of this 21st century.

The book is to be published in 2008.
